Backflow is the reversal of the flow of non-potable (bad) water or other substances through a cross-connection and into the piping of good potable water source. This is very undesirable. This can happen to two basic ways. 1) due to backpressure backflow and 2) due to backsiphonage.
Backsiphonage is backflow caused by a negative pressure or a vacuum on the potable water system side.
